Bache was for many years professor of chemistry at Jefferson College and played an important role in elevating the status of that school to its nineteenth-century prominence. He labored for thirty years on the Dispensatory of the United States and its various revisions; he contributed generously to the medical journals of his day, even editing for a time the North American medical and surgical journal. This chemistry text is his earliest work.
