It was Cruveilhier's intention to become a priest but his father demanded that he become a physician. He began medical studies at Paris in 1810 but soon abandoned them for the seminary. However, his father insisted on medicine and Cruveilhier completed his medical degree a few years later. In 1836 he accepted the newly created chair of pathological anatomy at Paris, which he held for thirty years. In addition to several important books on pathological anatomy, Cruveilhier wrote this comprehensive treatise on descriptive anatomy.
