THEODORIC ROMEYN BECK (1791-1855) Elements of medical jurisprudence. Webster and Skinner 1823 Vol. I: xxxiv, 418 pp.; Vol. II: viii, 471 pp. 21.3 cm.

Beck was the eldest of five brothers of whom three, including Beck, became distinguished medical practitioners. Theodoric Romeyn was born at Schenectady, New York and received his medical degree from the College of Physicians and Surgeons at New York City in 1811. He immediately entered practice at Albany but after six years abandoned active practice in favor of teaching and writing. He became principal of the Albany Academy in 1817 and also taught medical jurisprudence and materia medica at the Western College of Physicians and Surgeons at Fairfield and later at the Albany Medical College. He was very active in medical affairs, higher education, and edited the American journal of insanity for four years. This was his most widely acclaimed book and quickly became the authoritative work on medical jurisprudence throughout the world. At the time of Beck's death, five American, four English, and one German edition had been published.
