Complete Record - Heirs of Hippocrates No. 1458

Parent-Duchâtelet, noted for his work in public health and for his study of prostitution in Paris, was also physician at Hôpital de la Pitié. This work on the inflammation of the arachnoid, the delicate serous membrane lining the dura mater and enveloping the brain and spinal cord, is an exhaustive study of that subject. After a general discussion of the clinical signs and pathology of this condition, 140 case studies of the various clinical pictures and outcomes of intracranial and intraspinal infections are presented. Then, as today, these patients were gravely ill and, if they survived, suffered many disabling defects. Louis Martinet (1795-1875), a fellow member of the Paris medical faculty, coauthored the work with Parent-Duchâtelet.

Gift of John Martin, M.D.
