Although Latham is not a well-known figure to individuals interested in the history of medicine, his superior abilities as a physician and teacher resulted in a deep understanding of his profession. William B. Bean recognized the timeless wisdom expressed in Latham's writings and in 1962 published Aphorisms from Latham. Writing in the January 1987 issue of the Southern medical journal, E. Ted Chandler and Robert L. Bloomfield commented that "The aphorisms of Osler, Latham, and Hippocrates bear the mark of the philosopher's stone" (p. 88). Latham's collected works are here edited by Robert Martin (1817-1891), a colleague and also physician to St. Bartholomew's. Volume I also contains a biographical memoir by Watson. Among the many lectures on cardiology included in the book is one which gives a classic description of coronary thrombosis.
