The 117 case reports in the present volume were written by Bright and have been reprinted from Guy's Hospital reports. The editor, G. Hilaro Barlow (1806-1866) who was physician to Guy's Hospital from 1840 to 1866, comments that "these papers require little or no comment; they do not, indeed, suggest any new doctrine; but, besides abounding in important suggestions as to diagnosis and function, they are especially valuable as examples of care and accuracy in observing and in recording observations" (Preface, p. ix). The cases cover abdominal and ovarian tumors as well as diseases of the spleen, kidneys, and liver.
