Henderson served on various medical boards for examining candidates for the army medical staff and, on the basis of his recommendations, the Medical Corps was reorganized in 1834. Written especially for the medical officer, Henderson carefully outlines the steps that should be followed by the surgeon when examining recruits who have presented themselves for enlistment. A second part of the book deals with the discharge of soldiers from active service by the surgeon. In this part, Henderson pays particular attention to identifying malingerers and separating them from those with legitimate medical problems.
