FREDERIC JOSEPH BERARD (1789-1828) Doctrine médicale de l'école de Montpellier. Librairie au Rabais 1819 516 pp. 19.4 cm.
Professor of hygiene at Montpellier, Bérard was one of the most respected physicians in France. Although a fine clinician, his most original work was done in the areas of medical philosophy and education. He was an avid supporter of public health measures and was involved in a spirited debate with followers of Rousseau who believed civilization hindered the cause of health. Using statistics to support his view, Bérard produced a convincing argument. The present work is Bérard's most lasting achievement--a comparison of teaching philosophies and methods in European medical schools.
