Trained as a physician, Bigelow was also a skilled botanist, and several of his works, notably American medical botany (see No. 1444) and Medical botany, brought acclaim from both sides of the Atlantic. This treatise on the properties of drugs is an attempt to describe and otherwise expand upon the items in the newly published Pharmacopoeia of the United States. Here Bigelow examines "the sources from which they are derived, the properties by which they are known, the objectives which they fulfill in practice, and the manner in which they are to be applied" (from the Preface).
