Louis' work on phthisis (see No. 1438) was translated in 1835 and published at London by Charles Cowan (1806-1868), a pupil and friend of Louis'. Cowan had studied medicine at Edinburgh and Paris and was physician at Berkshire Hospital in Reading for many years. This first American edition has been edited by Bowditch (see No. 1713 ff.). After comparing the original French edition with Cowan's translation, Bowditch corrected Cowan's errors and added an appendix containing material Cowan had left out of his book.
