Orfila, a native of Minorca, studied at Valencia and Barcelona and was graduated at Paris in 1811. He was named professor of medicine at Paris in 1819 and became dean of the faculty in 1831. An eminent toxicologist, Orfila was also active as an epidemiologist and public hygienist. He was one of the founders of the Académie de Médecine in Paris and is considered by many authorities to be the founder of modern medico-legal toxicology. His treatise of poisons was first published in 1814 and became a classic in the field. This second edition is a greatly enlarged version of the first edition.
