Heirs of Hippocrates

The Development of Medicine in a Catalogue of Historic Books

Complete Record - Heirs of Hippocrates No. 1431

CARL FERDINAND VON GRAEFE (1787-1840) Repertorium augenärztlicher Heilformeln. Realschulbuchhandlung 1817 236 pp., [2] plates (1 fold., front.). 19.4 cm.

Gräfe, father of the famous eye surgeon Albrecht von Gräfe (see No. 1931), made important contributions in ophthalmology and clinical surgery. Gräfe was chiefly a general surgeon and served as professor of medicine and surgery at the University of Berlin for the greater part of his career. However, he was a military surgeon during the Napoleonic conflicts and became surgeon-in-chief of the Prussian army and director general of the Army medical services. He is particularly noted for his pioneering work in plastic surgery, especially in rhinoplasty and closure of the congenital cleft palate. In fact, many of the basic principles he formulated for plastic surgery of the nose, eye, and palate are still in use. This monograph on treatment of various forms of eye diseases is concerned primarily with the preparation and use of various medications. Gräfe classified them into twelve categories and provides many recipes recommended both by himself and other ophthalmologists. The volume contains a fine allegorical frontispiece and a folding plate depicting an apparatus devised by Gräfe for bathing the eye.
