JOHN EBERLE (1787-1838) A Treatise of the Materia Medica and Therapeutics. Grigg & Elliot 1842 5th ed., corr. xii, [17]-643 p. 23 cm.

Born in Lancaster Pennsylvania, John Eberle was an 1809 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania. After settling in Philadelphia he became the founder and editor of the American Medical Recorder. Eberle was a member of the Philadelphia Medical Society the success of the Society would play a role in the creation of Jefferson Medical College where Eberle was an instructor. He taught materia medica and the theory and practice of medicine. Eventually, he became interested in creating a new medical school in Cincinnati to rival the Medical College of Ohio but instead found himself a faculty member of that same institution. In this same year (1830) continued his editorial career as a member of the editorial staff at the Western Medical Gazette. The last appointment Eberle held was at Transylvania University as chair of theory and practice of medicine and editor of the Transylvania Medical Journal. However, by this time his health had begun to fail and was obliged to resign shortly after having only lectured for a portion of one academic year.
