Barton was a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and a distinguished naval surgeon who, as Chief of the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery of the Navy Department in 1844, was instrumental in securing a number of reforms in naval medicine. Barton's fame as a botanist rests on this beautifully-produced atlas covering medicinal plants indigenous to the United States.
