A medical graduate of Edinburgh, Prichard was physician to the Bristol Infirmary from 1814 until 1845 when he became England's commissioner in lunacy. He is well known for his work in the field of anthropology and served as president of the Royal Anthropological Institute. The present work introduced Prichard's concept that moral insanity was a mental illness. Today we identify moral insanity with the individual who suffers from a psychopathic personality.
