For nearly thirty years Guthrie gave free surgical lectures to medical officers of the Royal Army, Royal Navy, and East India Company. These seven lectures on excision of the head of the arm, thigh bone, elbow joint, and diseases the Royal Army was exposed to during the Spanish campaigns of 1811 and 1812, were delivered at the Westminster Hospital between 1836 and 1838.
