Delivered only ten months before Drake's death, these two discourses--"Early physicians, scenery and society of Cincinnati" and "On the origin and influence of medical periodical literature, and the benefits of public medical libraries"--were comprehensive historical studies. The second copy of this work was inscribed by Drake to Dr. Felix Randolph Robertson (1781-1865) of Nashville, Tennessee in 1852. Before being acquired by Dr. Bean, the book was in the library of William Drummond Middleton (1844-1902), one of the early deans of the University of Iowa College of Medicine.
