WILLIAM PROUT (1785-1850) An inquiry into the nature and treatment of diabetes, calculus, and other affections of the urinary organs. Baldwin, Cradock and Joy 1825 2nd ed. xii, 328 pp., fold. col. front. 22.5 cm.
Prout, an English physician and natural scientist, is associated with two important scientific achievements: the unitary hypothesis of atomic numbers (the idea that the atomic weight of an element is a multiple or fraction of the atomic weight of hydrogen) and the discovery of hydrochloric acid in the gastric juice of man and animals. This book, Prout's first and only important monograph, was first published in 1821 and went through five English editions, two American editions, and two German translations. In it, Prout presents his observations on urinary diseases with other opinions and ideas then in vogue. The single folding plate contains colored illustrations of different types of urinary calculi.
