A native Virginian, Ewell completed his medical studies at the University of Pennsylvania in 1805 and entered private practice in Washington, D.C. He spent his career in private practice in the Washington area, with exception of a five year period from 1808 to 1813 when he served with the medical department of the Army at the Washington Navy Yard. A general compendium of practical and medical advice, the book's contents are summarized by the subtitle: "Detailing Important Means of preserving Health, from infancy to old age: The offices women should perform to each other at births, and the diseases peculiar to the sex: With those of children and of adults. With an Appendix, containing Hints respecting the Treatment of Domestic Animals, and the best means of preserving fish and meat" (Title page).
