The Development of Medicine in a Catalogue of Historic Books

Complete Record - Heirs of Hippocrates No. 1402

CHRISTOPHE FRANCOIS DELABARRE (1784-1862) Traité de la seconde dentition et méthode naturelle de la diriger. L'auteur, Méquignon-Mariva, Gabon 1819 xvi, 311 [11] pp., 22 plates, each preceded by leaf of descriptive letterpress and guard sheet. 21.6 cm.

Delabarre studied in Paris where he received his medical degree in 1806 and eventually became a member of the medical faculty of Paris. He was associated with several Paris hospitals but was an active consultant on dental matters as well and is best known for his work in dentistry. He initiated his course of dental medicine in 1817 and wrote four books, all on aspects of dentistry. Delabarre was one of the first to describe the principles involved in using the lever, screw, and metal bands to rotate the teeth and, in so doing, he made a significant contribution to orthodontics. In the present work, he discusses the functional relationship of the teeth in some detail and the varieties of the teeth according to age and race. He also worked on the classification of malocclusions but made no major advances.
