AUGUSTUS BOZZI GRANVILLE (1783-1872) Ferners Beobachtungen über den innern Gebrauch der Blausäure. . .. In der Baumgärtnerschen Buchandlung 1820 viii, 80 pp. 17.7 cm.

Granville, a native of Italy, received his medical education at Pavia where he graduated in 1802. He traveled widely in the Mediterranean until 1807 when, while in Spain, he became an assistant-surgeon in the British navy. In 1813 he settled in London where he adopted his maternal surname in order to assist his entry into medical practice. He specialized in pediatrics and obstetrics, was physician to several London hospitals, and developed a large and successful private practice. He was a very prolific writer and wrote several books as well as numerous articles on a variety of scientific and medical subjects. He made his first contributions on the therapeutic use of hydrocyanic (prussic) acid in the Medical repository in 1815. He followed that with Further observations on the internal use of the hydro-cyanic (prussic) acid in pulmonary complaints. . . in 1819 and with a larger, more comprehensive second edition in 1820. The present work is a translation of Granville's 1819 book into German. It was translated by F. P. Ludwig Cerutti (1789-1858), physician and anatomist at Leipzig. In this brief work, Granville recommends the use of prussic acid in treating pulmonary tuberculosis, catarrh, whooping cough, asthma, spasmodic coughs, and other pulmonary complaints. He provides numerous case histories to document his recommendations.
