Although Lawrence was primarily a surgeon, particularly of the eye, he was also a scholar of natural history and general science. In this popular work which presents Lawrence's pre-Darwinian views, he cites such authorities as Cuvier, Blumenbach, Pallas, Haller, and John Hunter. Lawrence begins the introductory lecture with a sharp and erudite rebuttal of Abernethy's attack. In this first American edition, only four of the seven listed plates are included and they are combined on two folding plates at the rear of the book.
