For more information on this author or work, see number: 1387

With this series of lectures, originally delivered before the Royal College of Surgeons and published at London in 1819, Lawrence anticipated the doctrines of Darwinian evolution. Critics attacked his frank and unorthodox statements concerning the nature of man, the relationship of the various human races, and the relationship of man to lower animals. Lawrence initially withdrew the work from publication but republished it after an attack by Abernethy (see No. 1193 ff.).
