Magendie's text was very successful and was used widely as a textbook for several decades. It was also translated into German, Italian, and English--the first English translation being made by Edward Milligan (1784-1833), a member of the Edinburgh medical faculty, in 1823. The work covers the special sense organs and their functions, digestion, circulation, respiration, bodily secretions, and reproduction. The second Edinburgh edition, which was published in 1826, was a complete revision of Milligan's first effort and included two additional plates on the circulation, new tables, and extracts from contemporary writers on new advances in physiology. In this third edition, Milligan added a plate depicting portions of the nervous system, revised his already extensive notes, and added an alphabetical index.
