Cooke read the present work before the Lexington Medical Society and had it published at their request. In it he explains his belief that the vomiting of early pregnancy "has the effect in a remarkable manner of distributing the blood equably throughout the system" (p. 192) and is to be encouraged rather than treated. Once the vomiting stopped, he encouraged his audience to use calomel or other medicines "which keep the bowels in a moderately loose state; and not only is the vomiting relieved, but the tendency to haemorrhage and abortion prevented, by procuring two or three passages daily" (pp. 193-194).
