Third in the line of the famous Meckels, Johann Friedrich was the leading comparative anatomist in Germany before Johannes Müller (see No. 1631 ff.). He did much to clarify the misunderstandings concerning congenital malformations and other abnormalities, the subject of this work, and his work on comparative anatomy made Germany the center for this discipline in the first half of the nineteenth century.
