The fourth London edition of Forbes translation appeared in 1834 and this American edition was published the next year. Considerably enlarged from the first American edition (see No. 1365), the work now includes a biographical sketch of Laennec and Forbes notes that "the text is enlarged by the addition of numerous short passages and several entire cases, not translated in the former editions" (p. [xv]). Forbes has also added new material from the third French edition of 1831, as well as other notes and annotations from contemporary sources. The University of Iowa Libraries' copy is lacking the two plates that depict the stethoscope.
