SEBASTIEN GUILLIE (1780-1865) Essai sur l'instruction des aveugles. Imprimé par les aveugles 1817 224 pp., illus., front., 21 plates. 21.6 cm.
A native of Bordeaux, Guillié received his degree from the University of Paris in 1807. As a physician at Montolivet Hospital, he embarked on a study of the blind and thereafter devoted his life to this cause. He instituted the first French clinic for the blind in 1818 and helped form a large ophthalmological library in Paris. The present work outlines his methods for instruction of the blind. Various engravings are used to portray the crafts and occupations he thought suitable for his students. The book itself is the work of blind craftsmen.
