As director of the Massachusetts General Hospital, Warren allowed William Thomas Green Morton (see No. 1873) to perform his celebrated demonstration on the use of ether in surgery. Warren performed the operation (a surgical excision) while Morton served as anesthetist. Warren's support of the new development was in large part responsible for its subsequent worldwide acceptance. In this fascinating booklet, Warren gives a firsthand description of the early use of ether in surgery, including a detailed account of the famous operation mentioned above.
