In the present work, Spurzheim concentrates on "only the derangements of the mental functions. These are voluntary motion, the five senses, feelings, and intellectual faculties. With respect to the mental operations in the healthy state, I refer the reader to my other works" (Preface, p. v). Amariah Brigham (1798-1849), first superintendent of the New York State Lunatic Asylum at Utica, has added an appendix containing notes and supplementary material on the various conditions discussed by Spurzheim. The four plates depict side views of the heads and skulls of idiots as well as the plans for a hospital for the insane and one for individuals convalescing from mental illnesses.
