This work is a rather windy, pseudo-scientific discussion of moral and philosophical systems, the psychic origins of human morality and intellectuality, the soul, happiness, “sympathy and antipathy”, etc. Perhaps the most interesting part of the book is the Appendix, in which Spurzheim laments the attacks of Gall on his work, reminding the reader that it was he, Spurzheim, who collaborated with Gall on much of his then-honored publications on phrenology and the function of the nervous system.
