Complete Record - Heirs of Hippocrates No. 1315.5

JOHANN GASPAR SPURZHEIM (1776-1832) Essai philosophique sur la nature morale et intellectuelle de l'homme. Treuttel et Würtz 1820 1st edition. vi, 248 p. 22 cm.

For more information on this author or work, see number: 1315

This work is a rather windy, pseudo-scientific discussion of moral and philosophical systems, the psychic origins of human morality and intellectuality, the soul, happiness, “sympathy and antipathy”, etc. Perhaps the most interesting part of the book is the Appendix, in which Spurzheim laments the attacks of Gall on his work, reminding the reader that it was he, Spurzheim, who collaborated with Gall on much of his then-honored publications on phrenology and the function of the nervous system.

Gift of John Martin, M.D.
