Rust served as a physician with the Prussian Army during 1815 when Napoleon returned from exile on Elba, and he subsequently became a professor at Berlin, serving in several key positions at the military academy, the university, and Charité Hospital. He founded the Magazin für die gesammte Heilkunde, invented a number of medical and surgical instruments, was an adherent of using cautery in inflammatory diseases of the joints, and favored the use of mercury for treating syphilis. Rust was an active medical author and wrote many books and articles. Among his best-known contributions are his books on ulcers, diseases of the joints, and the present work on medicine, surgery, and therapeutics. Volume I contains the first description of tuberculous spondylitis of the cervical vertebrae (Rust's disease).
