Burns, educated at the universities of Glasgow and Edinburgh, was the first professor of surgery in Glasgow's school of medicine. At the time of his appointment in 1815, Burns had already had several years teaching experience at Anderson's College in Glasgow and had given clinical lectures in conjunction with his duties as surgeon to the Royal Infirmary. He was highly successful as a teacher and his classes drew large numbers of medical students. He wrote widely and at least two of his books on surgery and midwifery attained great popularity, going through numerous editions and being translated into several foreign languages. The present volume contains his major obstetrical works: The anatomy of the gravid uterus, Observations on abortion, and Practical observations on the uterine hemorrhage.
