Bell's expertise as a comparative anatomist was well known and he was appointed as professor of comparative anatomy at the Royal College of Surgeons in 1832. Bell had an enormous range of anatomical knowledge which he expressed fully in this treatise. He took great interest in continuing to change and improve the book and made a number of additions for this third edition.
