Coxe was appointed professor of chemistry at the University of Pennsylvania in 1809 and was transferred in 1818 to the chair of materia medica and pharmacy. Active in the field even before joining the University, he is regarded by many as the father of pharmacy in Philadelphia. He introduced the jalap plant into this country and developed Coxe's hive syrup which he compounded largely with syrup of squill. The present work is one of the earliest American drug compendia.
