William Lewis (see No. 925 ff.) compiled the first edition of the New Dispensatory in 1753. During the next century, the New dispensatory and its progeny, the Edinburgh new dispensatory, appeared in some thirty-five English, six American, and twelve foreign language editions or issues of one kind or another. Commonly referred to as the "Edinburgh Dispensatory," the various issues can be grouped into three main series. The present work, edited by Duncan, falls into the third series which covers some twelve editions (1803-1830). Duncan was professor at Edinburgh and for many years editor of the Edinburgh medical and surgical journal.
