The first English translation of Cuvier's Le regne animal (see No. 1240) consisted of sixteen volumes--fifteen volumes of text and a volume containing the index, bibliography, and Cuvier's classification of the animal kingdom. The present group of nine volumes include those devoted to the classes Mammalia, Mollusca, Radiata, Annelida, Crustacea, Arachnida, Insecta, and the index volume. Volumes 1-4 cover the class Mammalia and were edited by Edward Griffith (1790-1859) with supplementary material provided by him as well as Charles H. Smith (1776-1859) and Edward Pidgeon (fl. 1800). Pidgeon and Griffith provided supplementary additions to the classes Mollusca and Radiata (Vol. XII) while Pierre Andre Latreille (1762-1833) was responsible for the classes Annelida, Crustacea, and Arachnida (Vol. XIII). Latreille also did the class Insecta (Vols. XIV-XV) with additions from Griffith and Pidgeon and notices of new genera and species by George R. Gray (1808-1872).
