Dewees followed the standard therapies of his day which included complex medications, blistering, purging, and bleeding. Volume I deals with general concerns such as the qualifications of the nurse, matters of patient care, diet, and the administration of medications. Typical of the era, there is considerable emphasis on various fevers and their treatment. Also discussed in the volume are apoplexy, hydrocephalus, eye diseases, and various respiratory infections.
