Dewees comments in the Advertisement, "The necessity of a work on the Diseases of Females, and especially the most common of them, seems to be pretty generally acknowledged; but the difficulty of executing it, can only be known to him who undertakes it" (p. [iii]). Dewees first published this treatise in 1826 and a second edition appeared the following year. This second revised and corrected edition was published to add additional alterations and improvements to the text. A highly successful book, it went through ten editions.
