For more information on this author or work, see number: 1233

Dewees was much in demand for his services, and Kelly notes that he "was so famous that no parturient woman of the time considered herself safe in other hands" (Howard A. Kelly, Dictionary of American medical biography. New York, 1928. p. 322). Dewees' System of midwifery, unlike other early American works on the subject, contains a good deal of original material, including several well-executed plates. It ran through twelve editions.
