SIR ASTLEY PASTON COOPER (1768-1841) The anatomy of the thymus gland. Lea & Blanchard 1845 From the last London ed. 37 [10] pp., 5 plates. 25.5 cm.

For more information on this author or work, see number: 1224

This monograph on the anatomy of the thymus gland is based on Cooper's observation that in humans and bovines, the thymus gland is relatively large in the fetus and young subject but becomes smaller as the individual matures. Cooper believed that the gland was important to the growth and development of the body--a point which is still of some conjecture today. Cooper's dissections and microscopic studies were detailed and accurate, as evidenced in the five excellent plates which accompany the text.
