Heirs of Hippocrates

The Development of Medicine in a Catalogue of Historic Books

Complete Record - Heirs of Hippocrates No. 1216

JOHN RAMSBOTHAM (1767-1847) Practical observations in midwifery. H. C. Carey and I. Lea 1822 379 pp. 21 cm.

Ramsbotham, a native of Bradford in Yorkshire, became a surgeon's apprentice, studied at London's St. Bartholomew's and Lock hospitals, and attended the Hunter's Windmill Street school. He became a member of the Royal College of Surgeons, practiced for a time in Yorkshire and Surrey and returned to London where he became a consultant obstetrician. He was later physician to the Royal Maternity Charity Hospital and was also associated with the London Hospital. Ramsbotham was a founder of the Association of Surgeon-Apothecaries of England and Wales and played a major role in the enactment of the Apothecaries Act of 1815. The present work was first published at London in 1821 and in the United States the following year. The American editor, Dewees (see No. 1233 ff.), felt that "he would be doing an acceptable office to the Medical Community in this country, should he cause it to be republished" (p. [v]). The result of Ramsbotham's considerable experience, the book contains ninety case histories and numerous notes by Dewees.
