Heirs of Hippocrates

The Development of Medicine in a Catalogue of Historic Books

Complete Record - Heirs of Hippocrates No. 121

SANTE ARDUINO (fl. 1430) Opus de venenis. [Per Henricum Petri, et Petrum Pernam 1562] [16] 569 (misnumbered 573) [14] pp. 30.9 cm.

Arduino, a physician of Venice, was an active student of drugs and their actions and first prepared this work on poisons early in the fifteenth century. Although the book is primarily a compilation based on the work of earlier authors, Arduino often refers to his own personal experiences. Also included with Arduino's Opus is Ferdinando Ponzetti's (d. 1528) De venenis. Ponzetti was a physician who later became Apostolic Secretary and then Cardinal. According to the dedicatory letter by the editor, Theodor Zwinger (1533-1588), this first collected edition was published at the suggestion of Konrad Gesner.
