Pemberton felt that "All must acknowledge the great importance of detecting by early symptoms the insidious advances of internal diseases, which often proceed, without alarm to the Patient, and sometimes even without suspicion to the Practitioner, through various stages of increasing malignity, till they at length terminate in fatal, and irreparable evil" (Preface, P. [v]). Although this is purported to be the first American edition of Pemberton's book, an earlier edition was published at Leicester, Massachusetts in 1814.
