Fodéré is considered by many authorities to be the founder of forensic medicine in France because of his noteworthy Les lois éclairées par les sciences physiques, ou Traité de médecine légale et d'hygiène publique (Paris, 1798). In this work on apoplexy he sets forth the causes, symptoms, diagnosis, and therapy for the condition. He includes five of his own case histories and quotes widely from authors ranging from Hippocrates to Morgagni.
