Abernethy gave these surgical lectures at St. Bartholomew's Hospital and they were published without his permission in The Lancet in 1828. Later that same year they were published in an unauthorized book by James Bulcock (fl. 1820). Abernethy issued this authorized edition at London in 1830 and it was reprinted in the United States later that same year. These lectures contain a description of Abernethy's fascia which covers the external iliac artery.
