Because his predecessor remained so long in office, Abernethy remained as assistant surgeon at St. Bartholomew's for twenty-eight years before being elected to surgeon. Earlier in his career he was an anatomy student of Sir William Blizard's (1743-1835) at London Hospital and eventually succeeded him as professor of anatomy and surgery. Abernethy pays tribute to Blizard at the beginning of the first lecture on Hunter's theory of life.
