Abernethy's surgical observations covered many subjects. They were published in various combinations and editions under different titles both during his life and after his death. This earliest American edition appears to have first been published at London in 1811. Taken from the sixth London edition, the contents include his observations on the constitutional origin and treatment of local diseases, nervous and muscular disorders, digestive diseases, venereal diseases, diseases of the urinary tract, and tumors. Also included are Abernethy's Hunterian Oration given in 1819, observations on Gall and Spurzheim's physiognomy and phrenology, physiological lectures from 1817, and various lectures on John Hunter's views on life and physiology. Volume II contains a description of Abernethy's sarcoma which is a variety of fatty tumor found mostly on the trunk of the body.
