One of the finest books on surgery in English. Bell is regarded as the founder of surgical anatomy, and of the modern surgery of the vascular system, with Desault and John Hunter. He was the first to ligate the gluteal artery, and tied the common carotid and internal iliac. All of the illustrations in the book, of which there are 88 plates and 70 smaller illustrations, were drawn by Bell himself, and he praises his engravers, who included Lizars and Skelton. He was one of the great medical men who have illustrated their own books. (Garrison)
