Dufriche-Desgenettes studied medicine at Paris and was Napoleon's chief army physician during the Egyptian campaign. He later served as chief physician at Val de Grâce and was professor of medical physics and hygiene at the École de Santé in Paris. Dufriche-Desgenettes accompanied Napoleon to Egypt and Syria in 1798 and here presents his account of the medical aspects of the campaign. The first part of the book is his report of the expedition and consists of field reports and dispatches which describe the progress of the campaign. The final part of the book contains reports and communications from his medical personnel on various diseases, health conditions, and other situations they encountered throughout the area.
